My pal Monty McCord is a lifelong dirt track race car enthusiast. He built and raced cars years ago in Nebraska and has some fun stories about the cars and the racing. Recently, we were visiting, and he encouraged me to look at dirt and asphalt modified race cars on a couple of websites. In my browsing I tripped over a resin caster named Larry Baisch. His company Big Donkey Resin specializes in parts and kits for 1/24 or 1/25 modifieds.

I have a couple of AMT and MPC modified kits, so I talked with Larry about parts that might work. Larry has been making resin parts for more than 20 years. Also, he was involved in modified racing in the Northeast for many years, which means he has a wealth of racing and parts knowledge. As a result, he was very helpful about choosing parts for my idea.

As it turns out, I ordered dirt modified parts for what is actually an asphalt modified, but hey — it’s my model. Let’s take a look at what I bought!

Castings for all the parts are smooth and crisp, with no flash, bubbles, bumps, or any other problems. Made from water-based acrylic resin, Larry recommends simply cleaning the parts with denatured alcohol and a cotton swab. No other chemical wash is necessary, nor is soap and water. Easy!

My original idea was to use the parts on an MPC 1974 Vega asphalt modified. However, the AMT series of early modified coupes caught my eye, so I dug out the ’36 Plymouth coupe kit. I’ll  combine the AMT kit with Big Donkey parts to build a late-70s modified pre-war coupe.

Big Donkey has dozens of parts ranging from seats and drivers to bodies, chassis, engines, and much more. The company covers eras a variety of eras, including early jalopies to Pintos, Vegas, and Valiants popular in the years before prefabricated factory race cars. If wanted to, you could create your own custom kit by picking and choosing from Big Donkey’s catalog.

Larry also offers markings by Polecat Premium Decals.

A knock against resin parts is the price. But, as you can see, Big Donkey’s prices are reasonable. What’s more, it’s fun stuff that offers a completely different kind of building experience. Check it out!
