Replicating neon lights

RELATED TOPICS: tips | lights | neon
Q As a model and diorama builder, I have long been a fan of your book, articles, and tips, and I hope you have some suggestions on a topic I have not seen discussed before. I am planning a diorama based on the original Bob’s Big Boy in California. I’ve done both an internet search for photos and some preliminary layouts. I want to add neon lighting to the roof line as well as the Big Boy sign. I have used hobby-store neon paints before, but the results were marginal.

How would I create real lighting features that resemble neon. I would use the inside of the building to hide any electrical components.

An LED light source would be required to eliminate unwanted heat. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
