Digging the Dirt

Making nerf bars for a Chevy II modified race car
RELATED TOPICS: CHEVROLET

In the August 2020 Scale Auto (Page 32), I showed you how to build and lightly weather a modified Chevy II dirt-track racer. While you get to see the nerf bars on the car, I couldn’t show them to you prior to attaching them or the full list of parts I used for the model—there just wasn’t enough room.

I made the nerf bars from 1/16-inch coated wire from Plastruct. After studying photos online and in a book about modified stock-car racing (listed below), I clipped and bent the wire to make the various shapes and glued them together with superglue. The wire I had on-hand was older, so the coating cracked during bending. However, I used superglue with a touch of accelerator to fill the cracks quickly and sanded everything smooth. After both sets of nerf bars were dry, I glued them onto the chassis and painted.

I bought all of the parts for my Chevy II from Big Donkey Resin:
  • '65 Chevy II dirt modified body (No. 033)
  • Kneisel dirt modified hood (No. 018)
  • Modified dirt tire set #1 (No. MD-1)
  • Modified mag wheel set with large outer rim (No. MW-1)
  • 427 fuel-injected big block Chevy engine kit (No. EK-2)
  • Hilborn fuel injection set for big block Chevy (No. FI-8
  • Chevy big block headers #1 (No. EH-1)
  • Dirt Modified Frame Kit (No. DF-2)

Lastly, Modified Stock Car Racing of the '60s and '70s: An Illustrated History Featuring the Drivers, Cars, and Tracks of the Northeastern U.S. (by Steve Kennedy, Enthusiast Books, ISBN 978-1583882849) is an invaluable resource both for building models and an overall history of modified stock-car racing.
