This rerelease of the Revell ‘55 Chevy Indy Pace Car includes the original parts with a new decal sheet. The instructions are formatted as a 14-page booklet that includes a parts layout, paint chart, and 45-step illustrated assembly guide. Although the plastic felt brittle to me, I didn’t have any issues with it breaking or splitting.

The car’s 265 cid V8 engine with a four-barrel carburetor is well represented. The two-part small block also includes a Powerglide transmission. Individual components build up the rest of the engine and dressed up with a full complement of decals, right down to the manufacturer markings on the fan belt. Additional under hood items include a battery, wiper motor, master cylinder, horns and a clear washer reservoir.

The frame, underbody, and gas tank are molded as one; the X-member comes as a separate part. The interior floor forms the transmission tunnel.

Up front, the kit gives you separate upper-control arms and coil springs, but the lower control arms, tie rods and spindles are molded as a unit. Individual leaf springs, axle, differential, and shocks form the rear suspension. The driveshaft was just long enough to connect the differential to the transmission. Separate dual exhausts finish things off.

The tires have white inserts for whitewalls. I painted them to eliminate the plastic look and finished them with the provided Firestone decals. Chrome wheel covers and inner wheel backs complete the tire assembly.

The interior is well done except for the heavy flash on the steering wheel horn ring, which I couldn’t clean up to my satisfaction. Two parts make the front bench seat, and the dash comes together from three parts, including a chrome center section. Decals are included for the instrument cluster, Bel Air appliqué, and radio. The firewall mounts to the interior assembly.

The body needed the usual amount of care to remove mold seams. The side trim is molded into the body up front and completed with chrome parts in back. I pinned the door handles, mirror, and antenna for a more secure fit.

The windshield glass mounts to a chrome frame, which, in turn, attaches to the body. The windshield didn’t fit into the frame as well I’d have liked, but I was able to make it work with a little patience.

The instructions show the vent windows with the flat side of the frame facing out. That’s not right, and I reversed both, so the beveled edges faced the exterior. Also, the glass for the vent windows was too thick; I replaced it with acetate from my spares.
The headlights and taillights have clear and clear red lenses, respectively. You have a choice between using a convertible up-top or down-top boot.

The new decal sheet is much more comprehensive than the original release. Now, you also have decals for the engine, dash, and exterior emblems. The instructions show an incorrect position for the flag decals on the doors. Use decal No. 7 on the driver’s door, and decal No. 6 on the passenger door. The top of the flagpole should be oriented toward the front of the car. Additionally, the pace car did not mount a front license plate or use fender skirts.

Revell Germany has produced a welcome reissue of a well-detailed kit. Anyone interested in racing history or looking for a unique ’55 Chevy for their shelf won’t be disappointed.
