Making a mandrel

screw
RF: After seeing Gary McColluch’s white wall painting tip in the October 2018 issue, I was inspired to send along a photo of a mandrel I made years ago and still use to sand tire treads for a worn look without having to hand-sand everything.

The mandrel is installed in a Dremel and the tire placed between two tapered pieces of aluminum rod. An Allen cap screw is tightened just enough to grip the tires and hold them in place. This cap screw fits about 90% of all 1/24h and 1/25 scale tires.

A new one I’ll make in the future will have a longer assembly bolt that also acts as the shaft for the Dremel.
