Grainy cast metal parts

Tip: I stumbled onto a way of reintroducing the grainy look of cast-metal parts after you’ve sanded off the mold lines and injector pins, leaving a smooth finish but as a result, destroying that cast texture.

Do your prep, wash the part and add a thin coat of Testors Fabric Spray. I do a quick pass to lay down a thin, even coat. When that dries, paint with your desired color. I use Model Master Metalizer (non-polishing) gunmetal because it’s thin and doesn’t cover the grain of the fabric spray.

This technique is especially effective on engines, transmissions and rear axles.
