Scale scenery products for model car dioramas

RELATED TOPICS: SCALE
Q: I would like to build a diorama with some kind of scenery, whether it is buildings, trees, bushes, etc. Some of the items I have seen for model train sets look great and are lifelike. Would any scale of these items be adequate to use for model car dioramas?

Ken: They certainly would, Brad. Especially the foliage and groundcover products.

Companies such as Woodland Scenics and Scenic Express offer a seemingly endless array of products that include ground foam, fine turf, various grades of foliage clusters, field grass, and just about anything else you would need for diorama groundcover.

These companies also offer premade trees, but we can make our own for a fraction of the cost. Simply take a look in your backyard for twigs that are a suitable size for the trees you want on your diorama, then add “leaves” by gluing foam clusters to the branches or wrapping the branches with poly fiber, which will give the trees a more open, wispy foliage. A shot of hair spray will hold the foliage in place.

Details such as buildings and figures could be another matter. Several companies offer detailing products in G-Scale, which in model railroad language can mean anything from 1:20.1 to 1:25 scale. Be careful not to use detailing items that will draw negative attention by being too large.

In most cases, Eyeball Engineering will come in handy. Just pick out items that “look right” and you’ll be okay.
