Barrel-cleaning patches

Tip: While polishing out a model for NNL East last year, I realized my usual polishing cloth had seen better days.  Plus, I had dropped it on the floor and was afraid that dirt particles it may have picked up would scratch the paint.

As I was frantically searching for a new cloth, I happened to notice that I had some barrel-cleaning patches – used for cleaning the insides of gun barrels – sitting on the other bench.

These patches are soft, white cotton flannel squares about two inches square, and they worked perfectly. I used one for application of polish and another to shine the model. You should only need two or three to do an entire model.

When I was done, I simply disposed of them in the trash. I bought a bag of 500 .38-caliber patches at my local sportsman center for about $6.95.

Now I have a tool that works great, and is easily transportable.
