Putting windows in and keeping tires on the rims

RELATED TOPICS: WINDOW | TIRES
Q: I just got back into model building, and I’m having a hard time putting windows in and getting tires to stay on the rims.

I’m using clear glue on the windows, but I keep getting fingerprints on windows. Tires are glued on, but seem to fall off after a short period of time.

Help!

Ken: Welcome back to the fraternity of model builders, Art. Let’s see if we can clear up these glitches that are no doubt affecting your level of enjoyment:

You’re using the correct (clear) glue for the glass, but keep in mind that the key is to use it sparingly.

When you’re building kits with individual front and rear glass, spend time test-fitting the glass.

Sand or file any areas of flash along the edges of the glass until the clear pieces fit precisely into their respective openings.

At that point, clean the glass with a suitable glass cleaner to eliminate fingerprints and grease, as well as oil from handling.

Apply small dabs of glue at key points around the edges of the glass, and carefully place the glass into the opening. When the glue dries, carefully wipe off any errant fingerprints with a damp cloth.

We haven’t heard too many complaints about tires and rims from the same kit not fitting properly, but mismatched tires/rims could sometimes be an issue – especially if the tires are hollow.

There are several ways to increase the diameter of a rim that fits loosely within a tire, including wrapping the rim with a layer or two of tape or thin styrene.

Coincidentally, we recently received an E-mail from Colin Fletcher, who encountered a similar problem, and sent in a solution that we picked as this issue’s (February 2012) Tip of the Month.
