styrene

Pros: Clean moldings; detailed kit
Cons: Simplified instructions; no tires for optional wheels

Revell-Monogram reissued several popular models under the theme of "Basic Builder" to provide entry-level kit for builders wanting to move up from building prepainted diecasts.

The model went together well, and I only had two real issues: if you do not mount the fan with the tips of the blades horizontal and parallel to the ground, the fan shroud does not fit; and the instructions were very unclear as to the proper position for attachment to the underside of the hood, so I left it off. There were few mold lines on the body, and the ones present were light and did not detract from the model.

The red plastic is translucent and somewhat dull, but the chrome components and decals help bring it to life. I did not use the optional hood scoop or roll bar. Some "big and littles" to go with the optional five-spoke mags would be nice.

The engine and chassis are nicely detailed. I chose the stock fuel-injection setup, to add character to the engine.

I enjoyed building this model, and recommend it to those looking for a detailed 1957 Corvette, who want to make a basic build, or take the time to do the research needed for additional detailing. I'm looking forward to doing just that.
