Defective paint cans

I had a minor paint problem today, and I’m not sure why it happened.

I shook a can of gloss red paint well before spraying, but it seemed to deposit white and black specks into the paint as I was spraying, and also dried mostly matte. It was a sunny, dry day, so moisture wasn’t the problem.

I’m not too upset about it, because it’s easily sandable, but I would like to know what the problem might have been. Any ideas?
