|Tamiya's Zakspeed Capri kit was introduced in 1979 and was reissued a few years ago with its original markings. Now the kit is back, with a beautiful new set of markings. |
This model is typical of Tamiya kits from that era: it's a curbside with an excellently-proportioned body and just enough other details to be convincing. The kit was originally designed to be motorized, but that option is not included in this kit.
The molding quality of the 50 or so pieces that make up this kit is first-rate - especially the clear parts, which were blemish-free in my example.
|The body is spot-on, capturing the essence of the Zakspeed car. The
unique rear wing struts fit well and the seams between them and the
body are hard to see when complete. The louvers on the tops of the rear
fenders are separate parts, as are the mirrors and the windshield
wiper. The taillights are molded in clear, but the headlights show
their age, as they are included on the chrome tree.|
sheet was printed by Cartograf, and is virtually perfect. The decals
lay down over the surfaces very well, with only a small amount of
Solva-set needed. The tritone blue graphics stand out against the black
base, making the finished model striking, indeed.
is quite simplified. A basic front suspension features posable
steering, but all rear suspension detail is molded to the chassis. The
underside of the engine is also molded to the chassis, with all of its
related turbo plumbing. All of this molding is excellent, but it does
require some careful detail painting to bring it to life.
wheels are brightly-plated BBS units that also need some careful
paintwork to look as real as possible. The tires are made from rubber,
with one side having Dunlop lettering and the other having Goodyear.
interior detail is also basic because of the original motorized design.
The rear part of the roll cage attaches to the rear bulkhead, which
served as the battery cover in past iterations of this kit. To keep
this part removable, the rest of the cage is not present at all. The
dashboard is well done, but from some reason there are no decals for
Tamiya does provide a nice driver figure, which
I decided to use on my model, because the interior would look rather
bare without it.
This kit was a pleasure to build. Any modeler with moderate skills - especially detail painting - will have a
wonderful time with this kit.
is nice that Tamiya saw fit to issue this kit again. It proves that a
well-engineered kit doesn't have to have 300 parts to be a good model
to build, and yield an excellent finished product.
